Workiva is a progressive data management company that is revolutionizing the field of worldwide digital information organization. Workiva selected Jacobs/Ryan Associates to design an atrium interior to act as a central location for social interaction at their corporate campus. The atrium serves as an opportunity for interns for Iowa State University and experienced programmers to gather informally and exchange ideas in both large and small collectives. It also functions as an informal dining and meeting area during the day, and a space for social gatherings in the evenings. With the seasonal cold of Iowan winters, the interior atrium can be a verdantly green space that is welcoming and inviting throughout all seasons.

The first phase of construction was underway at the Workiva campus when Jacobs/Ryan Associates was brought in to present a vision for a new interior atrium space. The atrium’s incorporation of design elements used throughout the campus and its preservation of campus circulation help tie it to its context, but the reinterpretation of materials and site aesthetics give the interior atrium a special identity. The campus features native limestone as design accents, including large limestone blocks for seating sited along the pathways.

The atrium is divided by a free form series of block limestone planters into a collection of spaces embraced by lush vegetation. A large central planter features a flowering Water Chestnut, serving as a focal point in the large space. The open spaces around the planters are furnished with stylized modern furnishings so employees may arrange seating to accommodate large and small groups. Elsewhere, circular carpeted spaces have large armchairs for extra comfort. Cushioned limestone benches edge the circles and provide seating opportunities toward the interior and perimeter spaces of the atrium. Along the glazed façade, bar height seating and lounge chairs look out into the gardens on three sides of the atrium. The program for the atrium included an outdoor patio with fire pits clad with the same limestone blocks as those inside the atrium, extending the material elements of the interior through the soaring glass façades of the atrium.

Jacobs/Ryan Associates took great care in selecting the plantings for the atrium, with a wide range of heights, colors, and textures. The soaring 36’ height ceiling of the atrium allowed 22’ height ‘Wintergreen’ Ficus, which were planted in tree pits with grates to provide room for circulation throughout the interior space.

The Workiva interior atrium is also noteworthy in its field for its application of contemporary materials, methods, and aesthetics to a workplace atrium to recreate the experience of a contemporary plaza in a space that can be enjoyed year-round. Porcelain tiles take advantage of superior strength in a large paver, light columns lend a strongly modern feel, and clean design lines provide contemporary edges to the lushly planted tropical gardens. Intellectual ingenuity is at the core of Workiva’s brand, and providing this workplace oasis offers the opportunity for collaboration and growth that Workiva seeks to continue its forward momentum.
